Out in the Country

On 22nd September 2024, we hosted our first ‘Out on the Farm Day’ in collaboration with the estate of Mike Potter, a farmer in North Yorkshire, and Agrespect. To read more about this, click here. From this initiative we have grown the Out in the Country project.

As executor Adam Bedford beautifully put it, the Farm Day was “Perhaps the most diverse group ever gathered in a North Yorkshire Farmyard – truly inspiring.”

Adam and fellow executor Graham Clarke are thrilled to extend the partnership and sense of connection we achieved. Adam shared, “Mike was an extraordinary man, and we hope that Out Together will develop a series of events that Mike himself would have been pleased to attend and found value in.” The Estate is making a further donation to help Out Together explore new networks and create more activities to support the LGBTQ+ rural community. With this support, we have been able to launch ‘Out in the Country’.

Living in rural areas, people like Mike can face numerous challenges in making social connections. The Out in the Country project will trial new community ‘hubs’ in North Yorkshire. These safe spaces—whether a coffee shop, village hall, or other welcoming venue—will offer places where we can bring people together to socialise and share experiences of LGBTQ+ life in rural areas. The project will also develop safe, accessible online community platforms that will complement the in-person events we plan to host. By coming together, we can create a community where no one feels alone—whether they’re working in the fields, at home, or anywhere in between.

To make this project a success, we need your support in a few key ways:
