Out Together Members Enjoy an Afternoon at the M&S Archive

15/06/2026

On the 10th of June 2026, members of Out Together enjoyed a memorable and engaging visit to the M&S Archive in Leeds, where they explored the rich history of one of the UK’s most recognisable retailers.

The visit began with a warm welcome from the M&S Archive team, who kindly provided members with coffee and biscuits while introducing the collection and sharing information about the history of Marks & Spencer.

Throughout the visit, members had the opportunity to watch a selection of historical advertisements, showcasing how clothing, fabrics, and fashion trends have evolved over the decades. The videos provided a fascinating insight into changing consumer habits and marketing styles through the years.

One of the highlights of the day was the chance for members to try on a range of historical clothing items. Several members embraced the opportunity to dress up and experience fashion from different eras, creating plenty of smiles and memorable moments.

The archive also featured displays illustrating the evolution of product packaging, from canned vegetables and household goods to the development of the iconic meal deal sandwich packaging that many shoppers recognise today. Members were interested to see how design, branding, and sustainability considerations have changed over time.

Another popular exhibit explored the different staff uniforms worn by M&S employees throughout the decades, highlighting how workplace fashion and professional standards have evolved alongside wider social trends.

Before leaving, members had the opportunity to browse the archive’s gift shop, where a range of souvenirs and, of course, the ever-popular Percy Pigs were available to purchase.

The visit was both educational and enjoyable, offering members a unique opportunity to discover the history behind a much-loved British brand while spending quality time together. We would like to thank the M&S Archive team for their hospitality and for providing such an interesting and interactive experience.
