Volunteer with Us!
Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. By giving your time, skills and kindness, you can help older LGBTQ+ people feel more connected, confident and supported. Whether you’re comfortable with digital skills, enjoy chatting over a cuppa, or want to help run groups and hubs, there’s a place for you in our community.
Volunteering with Out Together is flexible, friendly and rewarding – and you don’t need to be an expert to make a real difference. If you’d like to help reduce loneliness and support LGBTQ+ people across West Yorkshire, we’d love to hear from you. Join us and become part of something meaningful.
Al’s story
I’m a software developer working for Sky and got involved with Out Together via the Sky Cares campaign. Day-to-day I write code for the Sky website and enjoy helping others develop their proficiency in using tech.
I’ve had an amazing time volunteering at Out Together’s digital inclusion events. Seeing our members improve their technological literacy week on week is a really incredible feeling. As a gay man it means a lot to me to be able to help out other members of the LGBTQ community and I always feel so welcomed at the Out Together events.
Char’s story
My background is in tech and digital adoption, and I’m keen to help remove barriers to accessing technology, particularly in the older population where isolation is a risk. I also have a passion for personal history and storytelling, and volunteer with Out Together to support and learn from different generations of the LGBTQ+ community.
In my day job, I am a Deputy Co-Chair of my organisation’s Pride Network, focusing on creating opportunities and safe spaces for LGBTQ+ professionals, particularly in the tech industry.
Steve’s story
I became aware of Out Together through another LGBT social group that I am part of. I’ve always been passionate about LGBT socialising and activities, so when I discovered there were volunteering opportunities with Out Together, I decided to get involved – especially since, after retiring, I had more time on my hands. I’m a “digital buddy”, helping out at our digital inclusion training sessions, and I coordinate the monthly Sunday lunches too. I’ve also recently set up Out Together hubs in my local area, including regular social activities and local digital training. It makes me feel involved and happy being a part of it all.
Tony’s story
I started volunteering for Out Together in September 2021. I loved what the charity stood for – and I still do. I have always been quite political and have marched in LGBT+ parades more times than I can remember. In the 1990’s I came out as a gay teacher at the school where I was teaching and never looked back – there’s been no more hiding away. Retiring in 2013, my chance came to devote time to charity and political work, and Out Together is by far the most satisfying of the charities I volunteer for. I’m mainly behind the scenes these days, but you’ll find me at the Huddersfield Coffee Hub should you fancy a trip over. My passions are for photography and travel, and I will be spending my forthcoming 70 th birthday visiting my 84 th country and taking lots of photographs.
Ant’s story
I began my journey with Out Together several years ago as a volunteer, providing telefriending support and later assisting with IT, operations support and digital inclusion training. As I became more involved, I saw first-hand the meaningful impact that out Together has on people’s lives within the LGBTQ+ community. When a position opened up within Out Together, I took the opportunity to contribute even further and pursued it, knowing it would be a fulfilling role where I could help make a lasting difference.

Not sure where you fit? That’s okay! Click the button below to sign up and we’ll help match you to the role that best suits your skills and interests.
Behind-the-Scenes Roles – Be the Brains Behind the Impact
Prefer working with details, data, or organisation? Our behind-the-scenes volunteers make sure every story of change gets heard — and every pound of support goes further.
Example roles:
- Data and impact volunteers (recording attendance, survey results, outcomes)
- Finance and Gift Aid helpers (analysing donations, reclaiming tax on Gift Aid, ensuring we maximise every contribution)
- Social media and communications support
- Admin and coordination
- Research helpers
Why it matters:
Your work powers everything we do — from reclaiming vital Gift Aid to proving the difference our hubs make. Without you, our impact stays invisible and our funding falls short.
People-Facing Roles – Be the Friendly Face of Out Together
Do you enjoy meeting people, sharing stories, and creating welcoming spaces? Our community-facing roles put you right at the heart of our hubs and events.
Example roles:
- Event hosts and greeters
- Hub organisers
- Befrienders and companions
- Fundraising helpers
Why it matters:
You’ll bring people together, fight loneliness, and help build stronger LGBTQ+ communities across our region.
